Therapy
Trauma and Trauma-Related Concerns
Difficult or distressing experiences can stay with us long after they've happened. Sometimes their effects are obvious straight away; other times they emerge months or even years later, in ways that can be hard to connect back to what happened. You might notice their effects in how you feel day to day, how you relate to others, or how safe the world feels, even when you can't always trace these feelings back to a specific event. Trauma can affect us in ways that are difficult to put into words, and it's common to feel like you should have 'moved on' by now.
Therapy can help you understand these experiences and feel more able to move forward at your own pace.
How therapy can help
Trauma-informed therapy isn't about reliving distressing experiences before you're ready, or being pushed faster than feels safe. It's about creating a sense of safety and predictability first, then working together, at a pace that feels manageable, to understand how past experiences may be showing up in your present, and to build genuine choice in how you respond going forward.
Common concerns
- Feeling constantly on edge or easily startled
- Intrusive memories, flashbacks or distressing nightmares
- Avoiding reminders of difficult or traumatic experiences
- Feeling emotionally numb, disconnected or detached from others
- Persistent feelings of shame, guilt or self-blame
- Difficulty feeling safe or trusting others
- Ongoing effects of traumatic or distressing experiences, including symptoms associated with post-traumatic stress (PTSD)
- Trauma occurring alongside anxiety, depression, burnout or other emotional difficulties
My approach
I believe therapy is most effective when you feel safe, respected and genuinely involved in shaping it. For trauma, this often draws on:
Trauma-informed therapy
prioritising safety and pacing, understanding how past experiences shape present difficulties, and never moving faster than feels right for you
CBT
understanding and gently shifting unhelpful patterns of thinking and behaviour that have developed in response to what happened
DBT-informed approaches
practical skills for emotional regulation and distress tolerance, particularly useful when trauma responses feel intense or overwhelming
Therapy is collaborative, paced to your needs, and focused on helping you build lasting skills and a genuine sense of safety that you can carry with you outside of sessions.
Fees & Bookings
Therapy sessions are $220 per 50-minute appointment. If you have a valid GP Mental Health Care Plan, you may be eligible for a Medicare rebate. Payment information will be provided when your appointment is booked.
